• I've been using this series to teach my ESL classes for over a dozen years now and I can't recommend it more highly. The stories are engaging and the kids really enjoy them. The reason I had to buy a whole new set was because I gave my old ones to my brother-in-law, who teaches English in Japan. Before a recent visit there, he'd asked me if there were any ESL books I'd recommend and the True Stories series came immediately to mind.
• This book is great for high-intermediate learners of English who would like to develop their reading comprehension skills and build their vocabulary. The vocabulary exercises after each story are very helpful. The stories are long, but fascinating, so students are motivated to keep reading in spite of challenges. I highly recommend it to students and teachers.
• As an ESL teacher, I tried using this book with a few of my best students. Unfortunately, there is simply so much work to do for each chapter which needs teacher guidance, that this volume can't be given as independent work. When I'm teaching a multi-level class, I use the True Stories series as work students can do on their own while I give more detailed attention to another group. However, the independent work needs to be something that can be completed fairly quickly - say 30 minutes tops - so that students don't get overwhelmed by too large a task at once. All of the lower-level True Stories versions do this very well - after a 30 minute interval, they turn their work in to me and go on to independent computer listening or time with me on specific aspects of ESL such as conversation, listening comprehension, and grammar which need direct teacher intervention.
  I may use this book in teaching English to native speakers as it is quite challenging enough for many college freshman who need some revision or review to catch up to the level of college writing.
