Behind the Darkened Glass edition by Rachel R Heil Pretty in Ink Creations Nikki Rae Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

  • “Behind the Darkened Glass” is a fabulous debut and the author Rachel Heil has a great future as a writer! From the opening scenes, I was instantly pulled into a world of intrigue and machinations going on in Reichsführer Himmler's headquarters. Both characters, Charlotte and Hans, are likable, real, and very relatable, and the chemistry between the two was perfectly delivered - I couldn’t wait to see how their relationship would develop.
But romance aside, it was actually the research that “did it” for me in this particular novel. Not only I recognized multiple actual historical figures, including Himmler, Heydrich, Göring, Röhm, Wolff, and many more, but their interactions and inner workings of the SS, in general, made “Behind the Darkened Glass” a true page-turner. Watching the future powerful machine of the SS and SD gain more and more power through espionage, blackmail, and finally, purge itself (The Knight of the Long Knives) was incredibly fascinating. Also, the same power struggle and its inevitable consequences led to some great character development in Hans, who soon began losing his idealism and started seeing the SS for what they really are - a club of murderers in immaculate uniforms, who will stop at nothing to achieve their sinister goals. And now, he was in too deep, along with Charlotte.
Brilliant characterization; beautiful, descriptive language; immaculate research, and characters that come alive from every page - this book is a real treat for any historical fiction fan. Highly recommended! (Btw, I’m sincerely hoping for Book 2! I got too attached to the characters to say goodbye)
  • I am hoping for a follow up.
