CIRCUMCISION THE HIDDEN TRAUMA is the first intensive exploration of the unrecognized psychological and social aspects of this increasingly controversial American cultural practice. The book has been endorsed by dozens of professionals in psychology, psychiatry, child development, pediatrics, obstetrics, childbirth education, sociology, and anthropology, including Ashley Montagu, Christiane Northrup, Warren Farrell, Sheila Kitzinger, Sam Keen, and Penelope Leach. Without much knowledge, the American public generally assumes that our cultural practice of circumcision is a trivial and benign procedure. Plain facts and research results conflict with these beliefs and raise serious questions. Dr. Goldman's application of psychological and social research coherently explains both the tenacity of the practice and the contradictory information and beliefs about it. After a review of the surprising abilities of infants and their responses to circumcision pain, the long-term psychological effects of circumcision are examined from the perspectives of both traditional and innovative psychological theories. We learn that circumcision has potential effects not only on men and sexuality, but also on mother-child relationships, male-female relationships, and societal traits and problems. The text is supported with clinical reports, interviews, surveys, and thorough documentation. CIRCUMCISION THE HIDDEN TRAUMA identifies an overlooked source of early pain and points us in the direction of both healing and preventing this pain. It is of particular interest to men who seek to explore their sexuality and deepen self-awareness; women who want to understand men better; parents and children's advocates; childbirth educators and allied workers; and mental health, medical, and academic professionals. The book has wide appeal because, more generally, it is about trusting our instincts, questioning some of our cultural values and assumptions, and reflecting on who we are and who we can be as individuals and as a society. Ronald Goldman, Ph.D., is a psychologist, educator, and executive director of the Circumcision Resource Center in Boston (www.circumcision.org), a nonprofit educational organization. He gives lectures and seminars on the psychological and social aspects of circumcision and provides consultation to expectant parents and circumcised men. Dr. Goldman has been a featured guest on local and national radio and television shows and has been cited in numerous newspapers and periodicals.

  • Absolutely critical information for anyone considering circumcising or involved in performing circumcisions. One cannot truly have informed consent without being aware of the material covered in this book. Moms and Dads, please read this before deciding to circumcise your son. Doctors and nurses, please read this so that you can truly inform your patients' parents of the procedure and all that it affects.
  • The author says that a family decision to circumcise has effect on the whole society and therefore is a concern for us all. I agree! He explains that the baby views his mom as the primary caregiver and loses confidence in her b/c of the traumatic experience. This breaks the bond between the mother and her baby and in adulthood leads to circumcised men hating women on the subconscious level. I totally understand this b/c current brain research says that traumatic experiences cause brain damage and I can imagine the pain caused by circumcision is indeed traumatic! YouTube videos of babies being circumcised show these helpless small human beings screaming on top of their lungs! They would not scream hysterically if there was no pain! In my personal opinion, no parent has the right to exercise physical violence against their child! Also, no human has the right to destroy another human being's sex life! That's just plain evil! Circumcised men do not feel the same amount of pleasure as intact men, and therefore may feel inclined to compensate by using drugs, also being in a relationship with a man who hates women is no fun, this I can say from my personal experience. We may have been to the Moon but as long as Humanity accepts this act of genital mutilation, we are no more than disgusting barbarians. Circumcision should be outlawed world wide! We women should not have to be subjected to hate just b/c of our gender! Just look at India, 40 M women raped and many of them brutally killed! And India is not alone, there is rape and violence everywhere! Enough is enough!!!
  • A very professional and informative presentation of the issues that has led to the U.S. tolerance of this unnecessary amputation of healthy, functional tissue in newborn boys, a violation of their bodily integrity and their human rights.
  • Circumcision The Hidden Trauma is an extremely important book, which succeeds in describing the cruelty of circumcision.
I can only wish, that all American parents to newborn baby boys, would read it before they let their darlings undergo this surgery.
And that Jewish and Muslim communities would consider a symbolic ritual instead of making irreversible changes in their baby boys bodies
  • Excellent, well-written, well-researched book. A good price and fast shipping for this currently out-of-print title.
  • Lots of good information concerning the barbaric practice of male circumcision. RG writes a lot of scientific, especially psychological aspects. We must transcend culture, religion and our own small minds to understand what circumcision is.
  • Truth about genital mutilation that has been normalized in United States
  • Great info
