“A delightful memoir, a book that brings the reader right up close to the sights, sounds, smells, and scenery of an Arizona winter, and even closer into the equally fascinating mind and heart of a remarkable woman.” ―Russell W. Peterson

Erma J. (Jonnie) Fisk, at seventy-three, lived alone for five months in a tiny cabin in the foothills of Arizona’s Baboquivari Peak, recording and banding birds for the Nature Conservancy. This is her lively account of that adventure.

"I want to be Erma Fisk when I grow up.

After losing her beloved husband in her middle years, she pulled herself out of a black funk and made an entirely new life as an amateur ornithologist. Fortunately for us, she wrote about it. In this, her first book, she spent five months on a remote outpost near Arizona's Baboquivari Peak, volunteering to observe and band birds for the Nature Conservatory. At 73, she acknowledges the occasional problem with her "gimpy" hip and a few other indignities of age, but they don't keep her from climbing mountains and trailing elusive birds.

Erma's voice is by turns amusing, crusty, endearing, and always undeniably her own. She casts a gimlet eye on a variety of things, including the eponymous semi-wild peacocks that live outside her cabin and occasionally invite themselves in. Her unflinching perspective and wry sense of humor makes this book a joy to read.

I also heartily recommend her "Cape Cod Journal," which was written some years after this book was published and captures, among other things, her bemusement at the small fame "Peacocks" brought her in the final years of her life."

  • I needed a positive, well-written book (after too many dark stories). Perfect! I'm a real bird watcher and nature lover so Erma Fisk's writing put a smile on my face. Wonderful descriptions and valuable digressions. I look forward to time with this book!
  • This is another Fisk book that is soothing to the soul.
