Firestarter Timekeeper Tara Sim Books Reviews

  • This is the third and final book in the Timekeeper series. I really loved this whole series and this book was the perfect conclusion to it. This story was fast-paced and action packed and so many interesting things happened.

Danny, Colton, Daphne and team are still being held prisoner on the Prometheus. Zavier, the leader of the terrorist group on the Prometheus, is determined to bring back the god of time and destroy the clock towers. Danny and crew aren’t sure what the right course of action is and must navigate this complicated field to do what is right and true.

This book was the most action-packed in the series. It was also the most complex, with multiple groups working towards their own goals. I love that we get to learn a lot more about the history of this world and the god of time. The world-building in this series has been amazing.

All of the characters in here are incredibly engaging and interesting. I love the sweet relationship between Danny and Colton and how the balance between the two shifts as Colton becomes more powerful.

I loved how everything wrapped up. I did think that how things ended with Colton and Danny was a bit contrived...however I enjoyed it all the same.

Overall this was an amazing series. I would recommend to those who enjoy steampunk adventures. This was an incredibly blend of fantastic world-building, amazing characters, and an action-packed story. I will definitely be watching to see what Tara Sim writes next!
  • This book was full of twists and turns that had me aching for more. Not only does it have a diverse set of characters it doesn’t focus solely on those differences. A way a book should handle diversity honestly, it is also packed with adventure and heartache. It is a must read (along with the whole series) and I suggest you start reading it today.
  • I was very excited for the finale of the Timekeeper series, and with the slow-moving, but expansive sophomore novel, I was hoping that Firestarter would jump into things right away and move us towards a build-up that would be exhilarating enough for a finale. Granted, you can't expect a 500+ pages book to keep the momentum up throughout, but my initial reservations about this book had less to do with pacing, and more with plot progression.

The first half of the book took me more than a week to get through - there was action, and lots of things going on, but in the grand scheme of things they felt inconsequential as they were circling around the same thing the impasse between the Prometheus crew and Danny's group of friends. Also, Daphne is avoiding Akash because she has learned that he was allied with the rebels of Kalki ship, and Colton and Danny are at odds as to how much to comply with Zavier's wishes. They don't want to reveal the secret of the clock towers because of the fear he will use it to free Aetas and thus causing all the clock spirits to fade away. Not great for Colton, but there's only so much they could stall, you know? Plus, people getting kidnapped, a clock tower being planned for destruction, then characters freed, then kidnapped again was wearing me out.

But then around the midpoint of the novel, a new antagonist emerged and the novel really kicked into gear. Suddenly the plot felt like it was moving forward in a definite direction, the promises of the synopsis finally coming to fruition. The second half of the novel actually felt like it was worthy of the finale label, as we race towards a climax that has your nerves screaming "oh god oh god what is going to happen?". That (and the deaths, some of which I didn't feel were entirely justified) was heartbreaking, and the subsequent move toward the ending was filled with so much pain with just a smidgen of hope.

Looking at it as a whole, I feel there were ways the first half could have been trimmed to keep the pace and plot progression consistent. The writing was otherwise very tight - the characterization was on point, the different desires of the characters and their motives and actions making and breaking set plans, the raw emotional power of some scenes, the action-packed battles - all of it was done well. But that first half is the reason I have to give it a lower rating it just took a lot of patience to get through.
  • Though Timekeeper is still my favorite book in this series, the very end of Firestarter made the whole series journey more than worth it. Sim puts her characters through a lot in this book--it's full of action, a whole lot of twists and turns, and brutal loss. Still, I'll confess that it took me a long time to read the book, and there were times that it dragged a bit for me. Maybe that's just because I wasn't ever as invested in the newer characters as I was in Danny and Colton. But luckily, this book brought my favorite couple back together and the moments between them sustained me. The tension in their relationship as they struggled between their own desires and the fate of the world was oh so heartbreaking. And they often had to ask themselves what they would sacrifice in order to hold onto their love.

And, again, that ending was ... perfection.

Reading Firestarter was like coming home after a long day of errands. It was like watching "The Return of the King". That feeling when you reminisce on your long journey, the friends gained and lost, the days lived and set your feet back upon your doormat. Yes, this book also destroyed me emotionally, I cried and had to be consoled with hot chocolate and hugs. But this book also put my heart back together again. With more tears.
